Luigi Borrelli — The Neapolitan Shirt Obsession

The history of Borrelli begins in 1957 in Naples, a city long celebrated for its deeply rooted tradition of sartorial tailoring. The brand was founded by Luigi Borrelli, but the true roots of the name trace back to his mother, Anna Borrelli, a highly respected seamstress who created bespoke shirts for the Neapolitan aristocracy. Among her early patrons were figures connected to the Italian royal court, including Victor Emmanuel III. The atelier later receiving the prestigious Royal House of Savoy title Fornitore della Real Casa di Savoia.

Anna’s meticulous attention to detail and traditional techniques shaped the house’s philosophy. What began as a small family workshop soon established a reputation for exceptional handmade shirts, rooted in the elegance and relaxed sophistication that characterise Neapolitan tailoring.

Under Luigi’s direction, the atelier expanded from a local tailoring shop into one of the most respected shirtmakers in Italy. The brand became known for combining traditional hand craftsmanship with refined materials, producing shirts distinguished by comfort, softness, and an understated sense of luxury.

Borrelli shirts are defined by a series of carefully executed hand-finished details—hand-sewn armholes, softly constructed collars, hand-attached sleeves, and piede di pollo button stitching—a process that can involve as many as twenty-five individual hand steps. Together, these elements embody the principles of the Neapolitan tailoring tradition: garments that are elegant, lightweight, and naturally draped.

Carried forward by Luigi’s son Fabio, Borrelli expanded beyond shirts into a complete wardrobe offering, applying the same principles to each garment and further strengthening the reputation of the brand. Despite growth, the company has remained firmly committed to Made in Italy production, centred around its principal atelier in Naples, where a significant portion of the work continues to be performed by hand.

Today, led by the fourth generation of the Borrelli family—including Luigi Borrelli Jr. and Carola Maria Borrelli—the brand continues to offer timeless tailoring for those who recognise craftsmanship not as an indulgence, but as a standard. This continuity preserves the house’s identity: a balance of tradition, artisanal detail, and understated elegance.

At its core, Borrelli represents a particular vision of Italian luxury: craft over mass production, comfort over rigid structure, and heritage over trend. The result is clothing that embodies the spirit of Naples—relaxed, refined, and effortlessly elegant.
