He sought out the world’s most outstanding fibres at their source, importing Australian Merino wool, Inner-Mongolian Zalaa Jinst cashmere, and Zhejiang Mulberry silk to be spun and woven in Italy. This philosophy—bringing the best raw materials to the mill and refining them through disciplined craftsmanship—laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected textile houses in the world.
Over the decades, the Trivero mill became renowned for fabrics defined by balance and elegance: cloths that combined lightness, strength, and ease of wear. Zegna’s approach was never simply about weaving fabric, but about understanding it—continually refining fibre, weight, and structure so that garments move naturally with the body.
Signature cloths emerged from this pursuit. Materials such as Trofeo wool and Electa flannel, came to represent the house’s standards, while Oasi Cashmere emerged later, reflecting a continuing commitment to responsible sourcing. Each fabric expresses the same philosophy that defined the mill from the beginning: excellence, restraint, and respect for the natural world.
This philosophy extends beyond the mill itself. In the 1930s, Ermenegildo Zegna initiated a large-scale reforestation project in the mountains surrounding Trivero. What began as an ambitious environmental vision evolved into Oasi Zegna, a protected natural reserve spanning over 100 square kilometres. It remains a defining expression of the house’s belief that industry and environment must exist in balance.
Zegna’s connection to the origins of its materials continues through the Vellus Aureum Trophy, established in 1963 under Ermenegildo’s sons, Aldo and Angelo. This international award recognises the world’s finest wool growers, with a particular focus on Australian Merino producers. It reinforces a longstanding relationship between the mill and the land, where the pursuit of excellence begins. The winning fleece becomes the foundation for Zegna’s most exceptional cloths, reinforcing the house’s long-standing partnership with the pastoral origins of its materials.
More than a century after its founding, with the third generation—Paolo and Gildo Zegna— at the helm, textiles remain at the foundation of the house now known as Zegna.
